‘You’re letting him out?’: Man involved in fatal hit-and-run in Providence released on $30K bail

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Providence man involved in a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of the aunt of two prominent Rhode Island leaders was released on bail.

Domingo Castro, 40, is accused of hitting Violet Barracks, who’s the aunt of state Rep. Marcia Ranglin-Vassell and her sister Lisa Ranglin, while she was walking on Union Avenue Sunday. He then took off from the scene.

In court Monday, Castro was released on $30,000 bail to which some of Barracks’ family reacted by screaming, “You’re letting him out?”

“To be in that courtroom this morning and the person who murdered our aunt was sitting behind us and we had no idea that was that person,” Ranglin-Vassell told ABC 6 News. “To see that person walk out, I don’t understand. It’s very confusing and it tells me that the system is broken.”

Barracks’ nieces described her as beautiful who had a passion for dance, and worked as a CNA for years. They said she loved to care for everyone, but when she needed that same care and justice, she was left alone as the driver fled.

“My aunt was lovely, she was beautiful, she moved to this country from Jamaica 50 years ago and she never left us behind,” an emotional Ranglin-Vassell exclaimed. “That’s why we’re here and we’re giving back to this country, and this state that just took our aunt away — that just failed us!”

The suspect’s license was revoked and he’s scheduled for another court date on Aug. 5.
