Man pleads not guilty to 2023 shooting death of 17-year-old

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — 25-year-old Samuel Medina was arraigned in court on felony charges this afternoon, and pleaded not guilty to the 2023 shooting death of a 17-year-old.

Medina is accused of shooting and killing Darnell Whitford back on July 14, 2023.

The shooting happened on Dexter and Waldo Streets.

According to police, Whitford was allegedly walking with a friend when a car drove up to them.

Police said Medina and at least three other people got into an argument with Whitford.

Officials said Medina shot Whitford, and then took off.

The teen later died at Rhode Island Hospital.

Medina turned himself in a month after the shooting.

He’s been held without bail ahead of today’s arraignment on three felony charges including first-degree murder.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Medina will be held without bail, and his next court date is February 3.

In a post shared by the West Warwick Steelers days after Whitford died, the team said in a statement that Darnell was a “great kid who worked very hard.”
