MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) —  A man, formerly from Middletown, was sentenced Monday after driving under the influence and causing a crash that killed his wife back in 2018.

According to court documents, 38-year-old Matthew Jones was driving a Porsche 911 on October 20, 2018, when he crashed on Third Beach Road near Cordeiro Terrace.

Police said his wife, Kory, was ejected from the car and later died from her injuries.

On Oct. 24, 2018, Jones was arraigned on a charge of DUI liquor or drugs resulting in death and driving to endanger. No plea was entered at his arraignment and he was released on $50,000 bail.

After a nine day jury trial, jurors found Jones guilty of driving to endanger, resulting in death. He was taken into custody and remanded to the ACI in Cranston to await his sentence.

On November 30, 2023, Jones was sentenced to a six-year full sentence with two years to serve at the ACI and a five-year loss of license.

Jones’ attorney filed a notice of appeal to the Rhode Island Supreme Court and he was released on $10,000 personal recognizance while the appeal is pending.
