NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — A Providence man was sentenced to state prison for trafficking fentanyl and cocaine in New Bedford.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that 27-year-old Yamil Velazquez-Acevedo will serve five to seven years after he was convicted by a jury of his peers in fall River Superior Court.

New Bedford police arrested Velazquez-Acevedo on Jan. 5, 2021 after detectives saw him trying to deliver thousands of dollars worth of fentanyl and cocaine.

Narcotics detectives saw him pick a man up, drive around the block, and drop him off in the same spot.

They stopped his car and saw $960 in cash on the front seat. Police also found a bag with pills in one cup holder and a Diet Coke can which was being used to hide drugs in another.

Police found four bags of cocaine in the soda can, which Velazquez-Acevedo said was the reason he met up with the man they saw him pick up.

The pills were later determined to be pressed fentanyl pills.
