PAWTUCKET, R.I. – The former owner of a Pawtucket market will be spending time behind bars for running an identity theft scheme out of his store.
A federal judge has sentenced 53-year-old Juan Vasquez, of Providence, to six years in prison.
Authorities say he led a scheme out of his business, the former Dominican Supermarket, and used more than 400 stolen identities to file fake-tax returns over four years that scheme brought in $2.6 million.
His sister, 50-year-old Belkis Vasquez, of Central Falls, was also sentenced to three years of probation, the first 8 months being in-home detention with GPS electronic monitoring, and was ordered to perform 200 hours of community service for her involvement in the scheme.
Juan Vasquez was ordered to pay restitution to the IRS in the amount of $2,682,042.88, while Belkis Vasquez was ordered to pay restitution to the IRS in the amount of $325,490.
