Man stole cruiser after altercation with officer in Providence, police say
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A man was arrested after allegedly stealing a police cruiser following an altercation with an officer Tuesday in Providence.
The Providence Police Department said 34-year-old Ishmael Lee was taken into custody and charged with stealing an automobile and resisting arrest.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said the confrontation occurred after an incident at the intersection of Broad Street and Atlantic Avenue around 5:45 p.m.
Perez said an officer witnessed a three-wheel motorcycle driving recklessly on the bike lane before it hit a moped.
The officer confronted the driver of the motorcycle, who police said had a heavy bag and was acting suspiciously.
Officers questioned the suspect, later identified as Lee, and a physical altercation ensued.
Lee ran from the officer, dropping a gun from his bag on Colfax Street, per Perez.
As the officer attempted to confiscate the gun, Lee jumped in the cruiser and drove off, according to authorities.
Police said the suspect took the cruiser about five blocks to the intersection of Atlantic and Elmwood Avenue, where he was arrested.
Officials said no one was hurt in the incident, adding that Lee was also charged with possession of a firearm, obstruction and assault.
