Man used ‘machete-like knife’ to fight Seekonk officers, police say

SEEKONK, Mass. (WLNE) — A Mansfield man is being accused of fighting Seekonk officers with a machete-like weapon earlier this week.

Capt. Matthew Jardine said the incident happened just after 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police said they received calls that a person was attempting to break into a tow yard in the south end.

Upon arrival, police found 28-year-old Eric Wein at the scene.

“It was immediately observed that the subject was armed with a large, machete-like knife, which was attached to his waistband,” Jardine said in a statement.

Jardine said at first Wein was compliant, but once officers made contact for an arrest, he started physically fighting Seekonk police.

One officer was injured during the fight and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Wein was arraigned in court Wednesday and is being charged with:

  • Attempted breaking and entering
  • Possession of burglarious instrument
  • Assault and battery on a police officer
  • Assault and battery with a dangerous weapon
  • Carrying dangerous weapon
  • Resisting arrest
