PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Many Rhode Island state workers have not been paid this week.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Administration didn’t say how many employees were affected, but confirmed workers enrolled in direct deposit did not receive their paychecks Friday morning.

Brenna McCabe says the delay was due to what she described as a breakdown in the payroll process. She did not provide further details, other than to say it involved a “temporary file delay” and was not an issue of funding.

She said the department would review the process to ensure it won’t happen again.

McCabe says the department’s top priority is getting money out the door. She says officials hope to pay people sometime Friday.
