The first recreational marijuana dispensaries in Massachusetts are officially open to the public and so far, business is booming.

The line went all the way down the road and even continued at another parking lot, where they are bussing people in from.

All of this waiting in the snow and rain just to be one of the first people to buy marijuana recreationally in the commonwealth.

Recreational marijuana, now on sale in Massachusetts, is available at a cultivate dispensary in Leicester.

People came from far and wide to check out the first two recreational pot shops east of the Mississippi.

Customers over the age of 21 are now allowed to purchase up to one ounce of marijuana.

Although recreational marijuana is legal in the Bay State, customers are not allowed to smoke it in public, or in a car, and it is illegal to bring it across state lines.

Chief Jim Hurley of Leicester Police Department said “the enforcement of the marijuana DUI law is very difficult because criminal law has not caught up with cannabis law. Law enforcement needs a device like a breathalyzer to tell if someone is under the influence and we need it accepted by the court quickly.”

And not surprisingly most people we talked to in line hope other states will follow in Massachusetts footsteps.

Cultivate is open until 8pm tonight but police say if the lines are still this long, they’ll start turning people away around 5.
