Mass. congressional delegation wants President Trump impeached, changes to voting system

BOSTON, M.A. (WLNE) — In wake of violent attacks on the Capitol Wednesday, lawmakers from Massachusetts say they want President Donald Trump impeached and want to see changes in the voting process.

Hours after chaos ensued at the Capitol, senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren addressed the senate and the nation blaming the president for the violence.

“We must recognize that Donald Trump us and will remain a danger to our constitution and our democracy,” said Senator Ed Markey.

“A democracy in which the elected leaders do not bend to the will of the voters is no democracy,” said Senator Elizabeth Warren, “it’s a totalitarian state.”

“Those who support this effort are supporting a coup,” Warren continued.

With two weeks until the inauguration, Senators Warren and Markey, as well as representative Seth Moulton say the president should step down immediately.

Senator Markey also suggested doing away with the electoral college altogether and making big changes in the voting system.

“We should abolish the electoral college,” Markey said. “It’s the vestige of a racist, Jim Crow America and we have outgrown it.”

“Every persons vote in every state should count just the same,” Markey continued, “one person, one vote.”

Senator Markey also says he wants to see things like automatic and online voter registration.

He also wants to change policy so former convicts can vote.

“Let’s spend our time on the floor debating how to reduce the influence of big money on our political system,” Markey said.

“Let’s stop gerrymandering and voter suppression,” Markey said, “that’s the real reform.”

An anti-fascist rally is planned for 5pm Thursday outside the Massachusetts statehouse. Organizers say they will voice their support of American democracy and decry the events in Washington on Wednesday.
