Mass State Trooper shot in Springfield, one arrested and charged

SPRINGFIELD, MASS (WLNE) – A 31-year-old man was arrested after a shots fired incident turned into an officer-involved shooting on Thursday night.

Just before 11:20 PM, a Massachusetts State Police Trooper responded to a multiple shots fired incident in the area of 104 Stafford Street.

A Springfield officer also responded to the area.

Both the Trooper and the officer turned onto Nursery Street, which intersects with Stafford, to find the source of the gunshots.

According to the State Police, evidence suggests that upon arrival, a 31-year-old male, now identified as Christopher Gardner, fired two rounds at their cruisers.

The Trooper was struck in his left leg while he was still in his vehicle.

The Springfield officer provided emergency medical aid before a second Trooper arrived and transported the injured Trooper to Baystate Medical Center.

A description Gardner was broadcast, and an MSP K9 Unit Trooper located and pursued him on foot before losing sight of him.

Gardner was later found by Springfield Police and arrested.

Garnder was charged with the following:

1. Armed assault with intent to murder (2 counts);

2. Assault and battery by discharge of firearm;

3. Assault with a dangerous weapon;

4. Unlawful possession of a firearm; and

5. Discharging a firearm within 50 feet of a building.
