Massachusetts phasing out hotel shelters by the end of 2025

TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Hotels currently being used as emergency shelters in Massachusetts are now in the process of being phased out for that purpose.

Home 2 Suites in Raynham and the Clarion Hotel in Taunton are currently being used as emergency family shelters.

The hotel in Raynham will close as a shelter by the end of the year.

The Taunton hotel will stop serving as a shelter by the end of June.

Migrants seeking asylum had been staying at the Taunton hotel.

State senator Kelly Dooner said these closures are part of the state’s broader effort to phase out the use of hotels as emergency shelters, and transition families into permanent housing solutions.

“That we need reform and we need sustainable reform…the way the system was working it cannot continue, it cannot continue to function that way,” said Senator Dooner.

“It’s fiscally irresponsible; there’s minimal oversight to things happening in the shelter so there needed to be a drastic change.”

Service providers for each shelter will continue working with families on permanent housing.
