MassDOT warns of ‘smishing’ phone scam

BOSTON, Mass. (WLNE) — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is warning EZPass users of a scam.
MassDOT said users have been receiving “smishing” messages to their phone, which is like a “phishing” email, but it sent as a text instead.
The message claims to be from “EZDriveMA” and states that the recipient has an unpaid bill, and will need to pay it to avoid late fees through a text link.
MassDOT said in a release they never sent out that message, and said it would never request a payment through a text.
