May Day events include rideshare group, childcare activists and 50-50-1 Trump protest
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — May 1 is International Workers Day for labor unions around the world, and this “May Day,” there are several protests scheduled in Providence.
At 11:30 a.m. at the State House, rideshare drivers with Uber and Lyft plan to rally for fair pay, better workplace policies and the right to a union.
It’s being led by the Independent Drivers Guild which claims to represent more than 300,000 rideshare drivers.
Later Thursday afternoon, parents and child care activists will “stroll” to the State House as part of the “Strolling Thunder” campaign.
The advocates will call for lawmakers to increase investments into childcare to ensure all Ocean State families have what they need to thrive.
The parents and advocates will be joined by state treasurer James Diossa, the newly-named senate president Valarie Lawson as well as educators for young children.
The “Stroll to the State House” begins at 2 p.m.
Additionally, throughout this afternoon, Providence will see three more protests.
At the State House, at noon, a continued 50-50-1 protest against President Donald Trump and his policies is scheduled.
Later, there will be two worker protests, with “Providence Worker’s Defense” calling for housing for all workers, and an end to all war.
That’s happening at city hall at 3 p.m.
At 5 p.m., protestors will again meet outside of Providence City Hall, where they will call for an end to the “billionaire agenda.”
