Mayor Correia returns to FR City Hall after arrest, as Councilors mull options

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia was back at City Hall Friday, a day after being arrested and pleading not guilty to federal fraud charges.
“I’ve done nothing wrong,” Correia said Thursday. “There’s no plans to resign.”
The FBI is accusing him of using more than $230,000 invested in his business to fund a lavish lifestyle.
Some City Councilors say those serious charges should be enough for him to resign.
“To be blunt, I’m of the opinion he should step down,” said Councilor Brad Kilby. “I think it would be best if he focuses on his personal issues.”
“I would not call at this point for his resignation,” said Councilor Steve Long, who is taking a wait-and-see approach.
“His decision should be made based on what’s best for the city, not what’s best for him or for the council. I think it’s what’s best for residents and the city,” said Long.
The Council does have the power to remove Correia from office, but at this point it appears they don’t have the seven votes needed to do so.
“I’m ready to do what needs to be done,” said Long.
Government watchdog John Marion of Common Cause says with such a compelling case against him, the road ahead for Mayor Correia will be tough. Marion takes issue with Correia’s claim that the charges have nothing to do with his position as Mayor.
“While that’s true, he’s not accused of using his public office to benefit himself, you’re the chief executive of a major city. You need to be following the laws you’re charged with enforcing,” said Marion.
Governor Baker’s campaign spokesman Terry MacCormack has also issued the following statement:
“Governor Baker and Lt. Governor Polito believe that in light of these serious allegations, Mayor Correia should act in the best interests of the people of Fall River and step aside until the case is resolved. Ultimately, it is up to residents and voters to decide who is best fit to lead the city.”
Fall River City Council President Cliff Ponte is calling for a special meeting Tuesday night to discuss Mayor Correia’s indictment, and any possible action the council could take.
