Mayor Mitchell says process for New Bedford’s next police chief is underway

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — Mayor Jon Mitchell said the search for New Bedford’s next police chief is underway.

This comes as the former police chief Paul Oliveira retired back on May 3.

Mayor Jon Mitchell said city representatives and senior members of law enforcement across the state are helping with the hiring process.

“We put together a search committee to vet candidates for the next police chief and it worked very well” Mayor Mitchell said. “They reported out candidates to me for final interviews and so that process has taken place”

A few more candidates still need to complete their interviews.

Mayor Mitchell’s hope is that a decision is made by the end of the month.
