Mayor Smiley to announce Providence Public Schools transition plan back to city control
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence Mayor Brett Smiley will announce the city’s plan Thursday to transition Providence Public Schools back to the city’s control, according to a statement from Smiley’s office.
The announcement will come at 11:15 a.m. at the Zucculo Recreation Center in Providence with city and education officials in attendance.
The statement added:
Informed by months of community feedback, the plan outlines the Mayor’s priority actions to improve student outcomes, address community concerns, ensure a successful transition to local governance and establish a more transparent, fiscally responsible PPSD budget.
The Providence Public School Board voted in August of 2022 to return control to the city after the state took over in 2019.
