FALL RIVER, MASS (WLNE) – Paul Coogan is set to take the oath of office as Fall River’s new mayor after defeating embattled incumbent, Jasiel Correia by a landslide.

Right now, Mayor-elect Coogan believes the biggest problem the city faces, is earning the trust of its citizens once again.

“Government can work for everyone in the city and not for politicians and people who want to do things that are wrong”, said Coogan.

Coogan’s opponent, Mayor Jasiel Correia was arrested twice on Federal charges and was accused of strong-arming marijuana businesses in the city, resulting in a moratorium on new licenses.

But Coogan believes the weed business is needed in the city.

“Marijuana business has a place in Fall River it’s just got to be a place that’s convenient, workable for the citizens,” said Coogan.

Coogan also said, “It’s a tremendous amount of revenue for the city. We just got approval this week to open up one on the North end on Weaver Street. Hope, Health, and Heal”.

Coogan also discussed how he is looking to address other problems facing the city of Fall River in the next two years, including a “very aggressive” plan to fix the streets of Fall River.

Coogan has been working closely with the city in hashing out a budget for the next fiscal year as well.

His two-year term will begin on January 6th when he is officially sworn into office.
