McKee and Healey join Democratic governors to denounce Trump’s activation of National Guard in LA

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Gov. Dan McKee and Gov. Maura Healey joined other Democratic Governors in a statement denouncing President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to respond to ICE protests in Los Angeles.

The statement, which was posted by California Gov. Gavin Newsom on social media, said that the president’s decision was an “alarming abuse of power.”

“It is important to respect the executive authority of our country’s governors to manage their National Guards – and we stand with Gov. Newsom who has made it clear that violence is unacceptable and that local authorities should be able to do their jobs without the chaos of this federal interference and intimidation,” the statement said.

The Associated Press reported that it was the first time in decades that a state’s National Guard was activated without a request from its governor.
