PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Gov. Dan McKee was joined by other state officials to celebrate the signing of the Hope Scholarship at Rhode Island College on Wednesday.

McKee, House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi, Senate President Dominick Ruggerio, and RIC President Jack R. Warner joined students, staff, and faculty at the campus quad at Murray Center.

“The Hope Scholarship is turning the dream of college completion into a reality while increasing the earning potential of our RIC graduates,” McKee said.

The pilot scholarship comes after the funding passed through both houses of the General Assembly and was signed into law by McKee as part of his state budget in June.

It will be available to in-state students for their junior and senior years, and covers their tuition and fees.

Eligible students will need good academic standing with at least a 2.5 GPA or higher, and be on track to graduate or earn an approved certificate in four years.

“This scholarship makes RIC by far the most affordable option for in-state students and makes a four-year degree accessible to many more Rhode Islanders,” Warner said.

Adult students who have earned at least 60 credits in their four years will also be eligible.

The pilot program began over the summer and will run through July 1, 2028.
