McKee reflects on 40 year anniversary of Rhode Island Nine marines killed in Beirut bombings

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Monday marked 40 years since the bombings of Beirut, Lebanon that killed nine Rhode Island marines.

Gov. Dan McKee spoke of the Rhode Island Nine at a remembrance ceremony at the Portsmouth Historical Society.

“We will never forget,” the governor wrote in a social media post.

On Sunday night, McKee joined state leaders and service members for a candlelight gathering by the Rhode Island Nine Memorial at Remembrance Garden Park.

According to the United States Marine Corps, the attacks killed nearly 300 United States marines, sailors, and soldiers.

The public memorial can be found walking by the Providence River on Dyer Street.
