McKee sends order to allow pharmacists to administer COVID shots

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Gov. Dan McKee’s office said that the administration was taking steps to ensure continued access to the Covid-19 vaccine.

The governor said he ordered the Rhode Island Department of Health to send a bulletin to insurers to allow coverage of Covid-19 vaccines for anyone over the age of 6 months.

The department also issued a standing order to allow pharmacists to give shots to anyone 3-years-old or older, regardless of FDA recommendation.

The move came after the FDA approval for the Fall 2025 shots limited recommendations to people 65-years-old and older, or people with a medical condition.

Others could have needed a prescription for the shot.

The CDC’s Vaccine Advisory Committee was set to meet on the matter.
