McKee signs ‘Purple Alert’ bill into law for locating missing adults with disabilities

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The legislation to create a “Purple Alert” system has been signed into law by Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee.

The law will help establish a system to quickly find missing adults with disabilities.

The bill was introduced after a non-verbal autistic woman went missing in Cranston in March.

She was missing for nearly a week, when she was found safe in the back seat of a car.

The alert system will be similar to a silver and amber alerts.

State police, the department of health, and the state emergency management agency will develop the protocol within the state’s public alert and warning system.
