McKee to announce new actions in face of looming SNAP cutoff

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee is planning to pledge his support to state residents who will be affected by the looming pause of SNAP funds due to the government shutdown.

SNAP benefits will not be paid out on November 1 due to the shutdown, with 140,000 Ocean State residents to be affected by the freezing of $29 million in federal funds, according to McKee.

The SNAP cut off equals approximately $200 per Rhode Island household for November.

McKee will speak Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. to “announce new actions to support Rhode Islanders” in the face of the shut off of funds.

Rhode Island communities and organizations are also bracing for the food benefits void, such as Pawtucket’s city soup kitchen.

The 195 Wolcott Street facility will be open for breakfast, brunch and dinner throughout the week.

Breakfast is available Monday through Friday from 7:15 to 8 a.m., brunch on Saturdays from 10:15 to 11 a.m. and dinner from Monday through Friday from 4:45 through 5:30 p.m.

The soup kitchen also has alternate locations for meals, including at Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue in Pawtucket across from the Visitor’s Center.

Collyer Park at the intersection of Main Street and Mineral Spring Avenue will also host lunch.

Both sites will provide lunch Monday through Friday.

Also pitching in are the Narragansett and South Kingstown Republican Party with an emergency food drive on Sunday, November 2 from 1-4 p.m. at 821 Moorsefield Road in South Kingstown.
