PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island has kicked off its annual month long campaign to raise public awareness of hunger among seniors.
Gov. Gina Raimondo spoke at the “March For Meals” campaign kickoff Friday at the organization’s headquarters in Providence and delivered the first meal of the campaign to a Providence senior.
The nonprofit says the annual initiative helps raise awareness, encourages the community to act and raises money for its program for Rhode Island seniors and people who are homebound.
It says the campaign also helps strengthen its relationship with area businesses, organizations, government and volunteer partners.
Members of the congressional delegation and several mayors plan to deliver meals to seniors throughout the month. U.S. Sen. Jack Reed is scheduled to visit a senior in Cranston on Monday.
