Middletown man arrested after Newport shooting
NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — A man was arrested in connection with a shooting in Newport last week.
The Newport Police Department said 24-year-old Johnny Escobar of Middletown was taken into custody following an investigation into an incident in the area of Jade Way and Kennedy Road.
Police said officers responded to the area just before 1 a.m. on July 5 for a report of shots fired.
Officers learned a victim had been taken to Newport Hospital by friends and was later taken to Rhode Island Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.
Authorities said detectives found Escobar was involved in the shooting, arresting him on Monday.
Escobar is charged with possession of firearms by certain persons prohibited, assault with intent to commit specified felonies, license or permit required for carrying a pistol and firing in a compact area.
He was set to be arraigned on Tuesday in Newport District Court.
