Middletown officials discuss possibly merging school system with Newport

MIDDLETOWN, R. I. (WLNE) — Town councilors in Middletown met on Sept. 2 to discuss the possibility of restarting talks to merge the town’s school system with Newport’s.

A 2022 vote by Middletown residents overwhelmingly approved of the idea, but was then narrowly rejected by Newport voters.

Newport officials raised the idea again over the summer, and Middletown councilors said they will set up a meeting with their school board to decide what to do next.
