Middletown teacher of 40 years killed in crash Sunday

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) – The Middletown community is mourning the loss of a teacher who died suddenly Sunday in a car crash on the Pell Bridge.
Mary Clark, spent 40 years in the district educating and inspiring students. Clark retired in 2009 but her daughter now teaches at Middletown High School.
She is remembered by her colleagues as caring and quick-witted with a great sense of humor.
“When I think of Mary, I think of her as a re-assuring teacher,” Superintendent of Middletown Schools Rosemary Kraeger said. “In her presence, she made everyone feel comfortable, she made everyone feel confident, and she made everyone feel secure.”
Just last Thursday, the Middletown School Committee voted to name the middle school’s gym after her husband Barry who was a longtime wrestling coach and gym teacher in the district.
Officials had hoped the event would be a great family gathering for the Clarks. Now, they’re trying to figure out a fitting tribute for Mary as well.
Mary Clark died on Sunday after her car crashed into the Toll Plaza on the Newport Pell Bridge. She was 72.
