Milford student released from ICE custody speaks out

MILFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — After being detained by ICE for six days, Milford High School student Marcelo Gomes da Silva is speaking out.

The 18-year-old was arrested May 31st in Milford while on his way to volleyball practice.

According to ICE officials, they targeted his father, but found the student instead.

While in custody, Gomes da Silva said he helped other detainees who didn’t speak English.

He now wants to advocate for the immigrant community after his negative experience in the facility.

“The most important thing I wanna say overall is that I feel like America itself should bring back Christianity and God,” said Gomes da Silva.

“I feel like love is a big thing that has been missing in America. There’s been a lot of violence, a lot of fighting and not a lot of coming together and working together.”

Gomes da Silva’s arrest sparked public outcry, and brought national attention to the Worcester County town as they protested his detention.
