Military helicopter collided with airline jet near Reagan Washington National Airport
WASHINGTON, D.C. (WLNE) — First responders are searching the Potomac River after an aircraft collided with a military helicopter mid-air Wednesday night near Washington D.C.
According to the FAA, a PSA Airlines jet collided in the air with a military helicopter while headed towards Runway 33 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
The DC Fire Department, the Metropolitan Police Department, and other agencies are currently conducting a search and rescue in the Potomac River, which is where the aircraft went down.
Senator Ted Cruz said “while we don’t yet know how many on board were lost, we know there are fatalities.”
ABC News said two law enforcement sources have confirmed fatalities from the collision.
The plane was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, according to American Airlines.
DC Fire and EMS said it was notified of the aircraft crash at 8:53 p.m.
“I can confirm that President Trump has been made aware of this situation,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said. “There are many agencies that are working on this response. Right now, both federal and local law enforcement are working together on the ground to try to save as many lives as possible, and the President will continue to monitor this situation.”
According to American Airlines, the flight departed from Wichita, Kansas and was planned to land at Washington Reagan National Airport.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
