Minister’s Alliance holds annual MLK Scholarship breakfast

Today the nation pauses to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with parades, marches, and service projects. Here in Rhode Island hundreds gathered for a scholarship breakfast hoping to help students recognize their dreams too.
The event was held at the Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston and is sponsored by the Minister's Alliance. The group focused on the possibilities and hope for the next generation.
“It's really about how you can contribute to this world and make a difference, and every body had that opportunity in different ways,” said Michael Vaughan, keynote speaker.
20 students were awarded scholarships which allow them to pursue their goals through education.
“When I found out I kind of was in shock, not that I received it, but that I was chosen out of so many people,” said Ambrea Allen of Woonsocket. Allen is studying communication at URI.
“What's most important is that we keep striving to really live up to the legacy of what he left us here in his dream,” said Vaughan.
Over the years the Alliance has awarded Rhode Island students $450,000 in scholarships. One recipient this year is 62 years old.
