She was crowned in May and now in the blink of an eye Miss Rhode Island is on her way to the big stage. Shruti Nagarajan left Providence Monday morning bound for Atlantic City and the Miss America Competition.

“I’m so excited. I still can’t believe it!” said Nagarajan.

ABC6 was the only news station there as the Brown University graduate departed for her date with destiny.

“I love competing, so I’m so excited to see this stage that is astronomical in size and be able to perform my heart out,” said Nagarajan.

The 24-year-old is hoping her unique talent will really help her stand out on the big stage.

“I’m the only Indian American in the competition– my talent is also Ballywood fusion, so it’s a combination of hip–hop and Indian dance—all very different,” she explained.

The Guam natives platform, "upward mobility: college access for low–income and minority students" is also near and dear to her heart.

“I want to be an example and show people that you can shine and overcome diversity in your life and still make it into a good school and ultimately graduate,” she said.

You can watch Nagarajan compete for the crown on Sunday, September 11th, live on ABC.
