All is quiet now in downtown North Attleboro. But by April, that could all change.
The town is planning a water main replacement project for this summer, and for some business owners that brings back bad memories..
“Last year was a lot of dust a lot of noise…some really weird smells…one of our customers got really sick. "
Caitlin O’Donnell of The Alternative Market says last year a gas main replacement right outside of her downtown shop was horrible for business.
"People drove around because they couldn’t find parking and didn’t want to deal with the smells or the construction."
She says this year is a different story.
"The town is keeping us really updated…they’re doing a great job letting us know what’s coming and what to expect."
Town officials have already given out informational pamphlets to local businesses, informing them of their plans. They also hope to limit the work to after-hours between 10:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.
Work will stretch the length of North Washington street from Elm to Ten Mile River
The road is lined with small businesses that are no stranger to disruption.
Preservation Framer co-owner Rob Dziubek says he’s happy that the town is alerting them way ahead of time. "We’re all concerned but we have to be proactive. "
Two years ago the Odd Fellows building burned down, closing down streets and covering the area with dust and debris.
"If we weathered the Odd Fellows building fire and a really bad winter [last year]…anything is possible."
The project is scheduled to begin in April and could last through August.
