PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — A Pawtucket woman is facing charges after a domestic disturbance led to a two-year-old child being hospitalized.

According to Pawtucket police, 26-year-old Elba Monteiro was charged with first-degree child abuse, domestic simple assault, domestic disorderly conduct, simple assault and disorderly conduct.

Police said that on Monday, at approximately 1 p.m., they were called to Samuel Avenue for a 911 caller reporting that a child had been thrown into a road.

When first responders arrived to the scene, they said they encountered a domestic disturbance where a woman, identified as Monteiro, assaulted the father of their child. A third party who attempted to intervene was also allegedly assaulted by Monteiro.

During the disturbance, officers said witnesses told them Monteiro had thrown her own child into the roadway, striking the pavement. Surveillance from the area later confirmed the accusations.

Monteiro was arraigned Tuesday morning where she was granted $25,000 bail with surety.

The two-year-old child remains at Hasbro Children’s Hospital being evaluated for their injuries.

Monteiro is due back in court in February 2024.
