Mr. Lemon co-founder ‘Mama Lemon,’ dies at 94

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The co-founder of a summertime staple in Rhode Island has passed away.

Eileen Rao, affectionately nicknamed “Mama Lemon,” of Providence, the co-founder of Mr. Lemon, died at the age of 94 on December 28, 2023.

According to Rao’s obituary, shared by Mr. Lemon on social media, Rao was the co-founder and proprietor of the lemonade stand for 49 years.

Eileen opened the business alongside her husband, Joseph, and worked tirelessly to perfect their product.

Her obituary reads in part, “During this past season, a customer of ours asked how do you keep the product so consistent.  We responded that our mother makes us take her a sample every day to ensure that the product met her standards.  We continue to operate the business because of our love for our mother, knowing how much she adored her lemonade store.  Our mother’s customers meant everything to her as she aimed to please them throughout her life.  Our mother took pride in the product that she created.”

Rao’s family said they will honor her memory by following in her footsteps in the Mr. Lemon business and keeping her legacy alive.

Her service was held Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024.
