A Providence rapper has been arrested leaving a recording studio. Twenty-three-year-old John Minaya, also known as “G-Money” was arrested last night and is charged with the murder of 22-year-old Devin Burney.
"They worked hard, many hours, and they came up with the suspect, some hard evidence and now he’s in jail,” said Major David Lapatin of the Providence Police Department talking about the detectives unit.
According to police, on July 1st, Burney was at Noah Lounge on Broad Street with his friends. When he was walking to his car on Corinth Street, shots rung out and he was struck and killed.
Police later caught Minaya who had fled the area and they found a handgun in his car. Minaya was arrested on gun charges and posted bail.
It wasn’t until Wednesday night that police finally found him again. This time, they had incriminating evidence linking him to the murder.
"Officers spotted him leaving a recording studio a place where they knew he frequented,” Lapatin said.
Police say Minaya tried to hide in the backseat of a truck and when they pulled the truck over, he tried to jump out and flee.
"He was apprehended, brought in to police and charged with murder,” said Lapatin.
Police say Minaya was an active member of C-Block, a well-known gang in Providence. They believe Burney had friends in a rival gang.
"It appears it’s just an ongoing feud. The people we arrest you got other people that are coming up through that are taking the places not just in these two factions but throughout the city,” said Detective Sgt. William Dwyer of the Providence Police Department.
