NASCAR champion Mike Stefanik dies from plane crash on Rhode Island state line

STERLING, Conn. (WLNE): NASCAR champion Mike Stefanik died from a plane crash in Sterling, along the Rhode Island border on Sunday afternoon, according to NASCAR officials.
According to state police in Connecticut, Stefanik had taken off in a seaplane from RICONN Airport, just over the state line into Rhode Island.
Police say he was heading back for a landing when he crashed into a wooded area next to the airport around 2:00 p.m.
Stefanik was said to be alert and conscious when he was transported to Backus Hospital with severe injuries and burns, according to police. He was then transported from Backus to another hospital in Rhode Island.
It is still under investigation.
