PROVIDENCE, RI – A 22,000lb MOAB bomb known as “the mother of all bombs,” was dropped on Eastern Afghanistan, Thursday in a U.S. attack against ISIS.
The bomb, roughly ten times the size of an average bomb used to carry out these kinds of attacks, was aimed at an ISIS-K tunnel complex in Achin district, Nangarhar province, Afghanistan.
"These are vicious people who decapitate individuals in a wanton fashion,” said Marc Genest, PhD, a professor at the Naval War College.
Dr. Genest told ABC6 News in an interview Thursday that this type and size of a bomb was necessary to crush underground ISIS tunnels in the rugged terrain of the Afghan mountains.
Although many people expressed concern about its implications, Dr. Genest explained the move is sending a strong message to the Middle East.
"We had a missile strike in Syria, and now we are dropping a bomb in Afghanistan. What kind of impact does that have on our reputation as a country right now from a global perspective?" asked ABC6 News Reporter Kirsten Glavin.
"Well it’s hard for people to remember this, but we’ve been at war for 15–16 years,” Dr. Genest said. “So when we drop bombs it’s not an unusual thing to occur. The reason people are more anxious about this is because of the recent attack in Syria where the Trump administration used the military instrument to punish the Assad regime."
Doctor Genest explained in detail that the United States’ message to stop terrorism in the Middle East is meant for ISIS and for the Assad regime in Syria after the regime was accused of using chemical weapons on innocent civilians. The Trump Administration ordered a missile strike on April 8th.
"President Trump is sending a message that in regard to Assad the U.S. will use the military instrument to send the right signal to Assad when he uses chemical weapons."
