NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The city of New Bedford broke ground on the Capitol Theater’s transformation on Acushnet Avenue.

The City of New Bedford is supporting the Community Economic Development’s renovation project that will transform the theater into a mixed-use building.

According to a release, when it opened more than 100 years ago, The Capitol Theater was a cornerstone for social life and culture on Acushnet Avenue.

The theater will now be home to apartments, retail space, classrooms, business incubator space, a community kitchen, and office space for the Community Economic Development and Employability Corporation.

The new space is designed by MassDevelopment as a Transformative Initiative, and has been supported with more than $1 million in Community Preservation Act allocations, a $1.64 million American Rescue Plan Act award, and a $375,00 grant from the Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund.

The new space is set to open in 2025.
