New Bedford man arrested in attempted robbery

A New Bedford man was arrested after an attempted bank robbery Friday afternoon.

30-year-old Javier Acevedo Ferrer entered St. Anthony’s Credit Union on Acushnet Avenue and handed the teller a note demanding money, and claiming he has a gun.

No weapon was shown and Ferrer fled the scene without obtaining any money.

After reviewing surveillance photos, police recognized Ferrer as the suspect and located him in this Hope Street home, hiding in a closet. Officers also located the note used in the attempted robbery inside his apartment.

He was taken into custody without incident and was positively identified by witnesses as the attempted robber.

Ferrer is charged with unarmed assault with the intent to rob. He is scheduled to be arraigned in New Bedford District Court on Monday.
