New Bedford man charged in connection to stabbing at bus terminal

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — New Bedford police say a man was arrested for allegedly stabbing another man in downtown New Bedford last week.

According to police, 51-year-old Derek Wiggins, of New Bedford is charged with assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Officials said that on October 6, at approximately 1 p.m., officers were dispatched to the SERTA bus terminal for a stabbing.

When police arrived on the scene, they said they found a man who sustained injuries from a knife. The victim told officers he had an interaction with another man before being lunged at and stabbed.

The victim was taken to an area hospital and is expected to recover.

After viewing surveillance footage, authorities were able to identify Wiggins as the suspect and located him later that afternoon with a pocket knife in his possession.
