New Bedford man charged with armed robberies

An armed robbery took place Monday night at the 7-11 at 1499 Acushnet Avenue at approximately 7 p.m.
Michael Scott Nichols, 36, of New Bedford Mass entered the store with a bandana around his face and gestured to his waist implying he was armed. He demanded money and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
At 2:45 Tuesday morning Nichols entered the Petro Mart at 171 Coggshall St. and tried to rob the cashier at knife point but was unsuccessful. He left after the clerk refused to hand over the money.
Five minutes later the suspect returned to the same 7-11 to rob it at knife point but was unsuccessful.
A witness helped police locate the suspect hiding in a drive way on Dean Street. The knife and bandana were recovered.Nichols is scheduled to be arraigned this morning in New Bedford district court. He is being charged with one count of armed robbery while masked, and two counts of armed assault with intent to rob.
