A New Bedford man is in recovering after being stabbed at Tilia’s Café early Saturday morning.

Sgt. Victor Mendes of New Bedford Police says the victim, who works at the Acushnet Avenue restaurant as security personnel, was stabbed in the lower back after getting into an altercation with two men. It happened just after midnight when the victim was trying to restrain one of the suspects, said Mendes.

The suspects, described as light-skinned Hispanic males in their 20s, fled after the stabbing. One is also described as having long hair.

Sgt. Mendes told ABC6 that the victim is in stable condition. His name is not being released for fear of retaliation.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Michael Carrier at (508) 991-6300 ext. 114.
