NEW BEDFORD, M.A. (WLNE) – A single candle sits on a step outside this Emerson Street home Sunday evening, honoring the life of Steven Doyle. The 27-year-old brutally stabbed to death early that morning.
“I’d known him all his life. He called me Pop’s. Planning on having a kid. He was talking to me, he was working, and he was getting his self together” says loved one David Andrade.
Andrade, owns the home where the incident took place. He says Doyle had been living there for the past five months.
“I heard a commotion. I heard a big bang. My dog started going crazy” Andrade recalls. In another room, 55-year-old New Bedford man William Macomber, stabbed Doyle following an argument.
Macomber had been renting a room in Andrade’s house.
“He stabbed Stevie with a big knife that was embedded in him. He kept staring at me as if he wanted me to do something and there was nothing I could do and he collapsed in my kitchen and just bled out” Andrade adds.
Next, Andrade says Macomber ran out of the house, so he and his son followed trying to stop him.
“He ran, I came out I started yelling you’re going to go to jail, you’re going to go to jail” he tells ABC6 News. “My grandson chased him. Jumped in the back of his truck trying to break the window to get at him.”
Police say with the help of witnesses the suspect was found parked in his car on Shawmut Ave, he was then arrested
However even with a suspect caught, neighbors say they’re on edge.
“Stuff like this don’t really happen out here” says Clifford Mignaolt. “We’ve got deadbolts here on the doors and the landlord gave me an aluminum baseball bat. Says if anyone try’s to break in your house hit him in the head.”
But for Andrade, this loss means the end for him here. “I’m selling the house. I’ve gotta get out of here. I can’t stay here no more.”
Macomber is due in New Bedford District Court Monday morning .
