New Bedford man, others charged with assaulting Massachusetts state troopers

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — A New Bedford man has received multiple charges in connection with a Monday morning traffic stop-turned chase.
According to Massachusetts state police, Luis F. Santos, 24, faces charges including assaulting a police officer, along with the two other occupants of the vehicle.
The traffic stop occurred on Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester, Massachusetts when a Land Rover was pulled over for excessive window tint and not having a front license plate.
Because of the tint, troopers approached the vehicle and ordered the driver to lower the window.
After discovering the driver, identified as Tylique K. Ortiz-Howard, 25, of Boston, had a criminal history involving firearms, troopers ordered the driver to exit the vehicle.
Ortiz-Howard refused multiple orders to exit the vehicle and became hostile.
Troopers approached the vehicle and attempted to open the door, and Ortiz-Howard sped away.
The open door of the vehicle struck the two troopers, who were not seriously injured.
Troopers observed passengers throwing items out the window as they fled.
The suspect vehicle was spotted by Boston police in West Roxbury headed toward Dedham.
The vehicle parked behind a hotel where police converged and Santos was arrested while fleeing the building.
Ortiz-Howard and the second passenger, Tristian D. Howard, 21, of Brockton were also apprehended.
