New Bedford man sentenced for beating dog with baseball bat

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — A New Bedford man was sentenced for beating his dog with a baseball bat in 2018, according to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn, III.
57-year-old Gregory Ostiguy was sentenced to serve one year in the House of Correction, which was deemed served.
According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Ostiguy was previously convicted for the same charge in March of 2021 and sentenced to serve one year, but was given a new trial after the Court decided he had “not received a full explanation of his rights from the Court.”
On May 18, 2018, Dartmouth police responded to reports of a man beating a dog with a baseball bat in the area of Colonial and Slocum Roads.
At the scene, Ostiguy told police he was “frustrated” because his pit bull had eaten his lunch.
Witnesses told police that they saw Ostiguy “strike the dog numerous times with a wooden baseball bat,” the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said.
The pit bull was treated for a cheek laceration at a local veterinary hospital, where a veterinarian said the dog was injured by external trauma.
After his conviction for animal cruelty in 2021, Ostiguy was sentenced to serve three and a half years to seven years in State Prison for threatening two probation officers.
