New Bedford man sentenced to 8 to 10 years in prison for two robberies

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) – A New Bedford man was sentenced to serve eight to ten years in prison for two 2016 robberies.
Scott Almeida, 47, pleaded guilty on two counts of unarmed robbery charges.
Almeida has a lengthy history of unarmed robberies according to a press release by the District Attorney’s office.
One of the robberies occurred in September of 2016 at a 7-11 store when Almeida approached the register with a bottle of soda and said, “give me everything from the register.”
The clerk handed over $120 from the cash drawer, and Almeida fled on foot.
The second robbery occurred in October of 2016 at the same 7-11 store with almost the same scenario.
The cashier identified Almeida as the same person who robbed the store in September.
Almeida was arrested in October of 2016 after a failed robbery at Jalice Café.
Almeida told the bartender he had a gun and demanded all of their money.
The owner ran outside for help, and called out to her husband and his friends who witnessed Almeida running out of the café.
The friends chased Almeida for a block before he ran into a telephone pole and hit the ground.
During the time of all three incidents, Almeida was on probation for an unarmed robbery.
He received a six year prison sentence in 2010 and was put on probation until November of 2017.
He was also convicted in 2005 for an unarmed robbery where he received a four to five year prison sentence.
"The defendant has a history of committing robberies. He was on probation when he committed these recent robberies of people just trying to make a living," District Attorney Quinn said. "The ten year sentence is necessary and appropriate to protect the public from the defendant."
