New Bedford Police arrest man for gun possession

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The New Bedford Police Department said a man was arrested and charged for possession of a gun in the city.
On Jan. 31, police were patrolling central New Bedford when they received information regarding a man in possession of a firearm.
Around 8:30 p.m., police discovered 21-year-old Dwayne Watkins in the area of the Tremont St. and James St. intersection.
When officers approached Watkins, he fled the scene on foot and “appeared to be holding an item firmly against his body,” according to New Bedford police.
After a foot pursuit, police caught him in a nearby yard and allegedly found Watkins with a loaded handgun.
Watkins was charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license and possession of ammunition without an FID card.
