New Bedford Police arrest two after witnessing drug transaction

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The New Bedford Police Department said it arrested two men after witnessing a drug transaction.
30-year-old Joshua Travassos and 38-year-old Keith Fleming are charged with trafficking fentanyl in excess of 36 grams, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, and conspiracy to violate the controlled substance laws.
Travossos faces additional charges for being a repeat offender after being convicted in 2018 for possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
On March 1, police were patrolling Acushnet Avenue, which police said receives complaints from neighbors and businesses and is known as a drug activity hot spot.
On the watch, police observed two individuals, later identified as Travassos and Fleming, allegedly engaged in a drug transaction.
When approached by police, the suspects then allegedly attempted to discard items in their hands.
Additional patrol units responded to the scene and secured the suspects, then conducted a search.
Police said the men were allegedly found in possession of over 50 grams of fentanyl and eight grams of cocaine.
Additionally, police said they seized $1,186 in cash from Travassos and $140 from Fleming.
The defendants were taken into custody.
