NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) – A New Bedford resource officer is being recognized for going above and beyond the line of duty.

Officer Shane Harris has served the Whaling City Jr./Sr. Regional High School for 12 years. In July, he will receive the Exceptional Service Award from the National Association of School Resource Officers.

“Officer Harris has demonstrated the unique ability to make deliberate connections with some of our most at-risk students due to his personal experiences,” said John Tweedie, Principal of Whaling City Jr./Sr. High School. Tweedie nominated Officer Harris for the award.

In his nomination letter, Tweedie said Officer Harris grew up in foster care and “had his own ‘run-ins’ with the law.” Tweedie said Officer Harris uses his own personal experience to connect with students in similar situations. He spends time meeting with students individually, helping with academic work, or giving them rides home.

“Harris uses these acute experiences to build strong relationships with our students and help steer students towards engaging in more positive activities, e.g. sports, school groups,” Tweedie wrote.

In a Facebook post, the New Bedford Police Department wrote that Chief Paul Oliveira “commends Officer Harris for being an exemplary role model to students and other officers.”

The awards ceremony will take place in Florida next month.
